The work presents 624 species of reptiles; even after 104 years, this monograph it is still considered the standard work on the region. The two volume set covers the region from Sumatra through New Guinea and includes the island of Borneo. This work was the herpetological culmination of the Dutch effort to explore their territory in the East Indies which began in the 18th century. From the research library of Stanford herpetologist/ichthyologist George Sprague Myers, with his signature and circular name stamp on the front endpaper and on the verso of the title page. No other ownership marks and no signs of use. Minor bump to rear outer corner of volume I only; a bright and clean copy in fine condition..
