Description: Washington: Beverly Tucker, 1856. First edition. Pp. (Part V): vii, 1-165 + folding hand-colored botanical profile of forest trees, 59 monochrome plates (= Cactaceae 24 plates; Botany 25 plates; Mosses and Liverworts 10 plates); (Part VI): pp. 288, numerous tables. Later black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, lg 4to (11.5 x 9 inches). Part V - Botany of the Expedition - contains: 'General Description of the Botanical Character of the Country' by J. M. Bigelow; 'Description of Forest Trees' by J. M. Bigelow; 'Description of the Cactaceae' by J. Engelmann and J. M. Bigelow; 'Descriptions of the General Botanical Collections' by J. Torrey; and 'Description of the Mosses and Liverworts' by W. Sullivant. Part VI - Zoology of the Expedition - contains a brief summary of the zoological collections and a large number of appendices presenting data of the expedition. This is the Senate issue of the 33rd Congress, 2nd Session. The front endpaper is inscribed by George Haley, dated March 18, 1941. There are no other ownership marks and no library marks. Six of the cactus plates show soon uniform tanning, nine of the botanical plates show some light uniform tanning or foxing, the outer from joint shows some cracking but the joint is tight, a few text pages show some light browning, the inner joints have been repaired; overall a tight copy in very good condition..
