Description: Various places, various publishers, 1861-1903. First edition. Pp. 400+ with handwritten index to all 28 papers at front; 8 hand-colored plates, 4 black-and-white halftone plates, some text-figures. Early one-half black leather over black pebble-cloth, spine is gilt-ruled, title lettered in gilt on the front cover, 8vo. A few of the longer titles include: ""On the birds collected by Mr. Hall, of Melbourne, on the banks of the Lena River between Gigalowa and its mouth"" by E. Hartert; ""On the geographical distribution of the true pheasants (genus Phasianus sensu stricto)"" by S. A. Buturlin; ""On the mammals presented by Allan O. Hume to the Natural History Museum"" by Oldfield Thomas (with two hand-colored plates); ""Ornithological observations in the Sutlej valley, N. W. Himalaya"" by F. Stoliczka; ""On the silver pheasants of Burma"" by Oldfield Thomas; ""Notes on a collection of birds made by Mr. Harry W. Hensen in the island of Yezo, Japan"" by Loenhard Stejneger; and ""On a collection of reptiles and batrachians made by Mr. J. D. La Touche in N. W. Fokien, China by G. A. Boulenger (with one hand-colored plate and 3 monochrome plates). Two color plates have the genus and species of the bird neatly written in the outer corner of the plate. No ownership marks. Light foxing to the hand-written index and to the endpapers, light edge to one outer corner; a tight and clean copy in very good condition..
