The result of a collaboration between Cunningham and Editta Sherman (the Duchess of Carnegie Hall), also a photographer. Cunningham collected the makings of 500 different outfits from thrift shops, street fairs and auctions and began his project of photographing 200 years of fashion and architectural design together, using Sherman as his model, wearing the various costumes, posed in front of over 1,800 Manhattan locations. The tour takes the reader from 1766, at St. Paul's Church, through to a 1970 subway car/platform. The book is arranged chronologically, and Sherman's costumes evolve as the photos progress.
