Description: “Juif couvert du taled et aiant les teffilin à la tête et au bras” [Jew covered with tallit and with teffilin on his head and arm], copper engraving made in 1725 by Bernard Picard for his “Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde”. Coloured by a later hand. Size: (plate): 32 x 21 cm. During the Jewish morning prayer (shacharit) a tallit is worn over the clothing. The tallit is a rectangular fringed garment with twined and knotted fringes known as tzitzit attached to its four corners. In addition, prayer belts (tefillin) are worn on the arm and on the head. There are black boxes on the tefillin containing texts from the Torah. The boxes are applied on the upper arm (close to the heart, where you feel), on the head (where the soul is) and the hand (as an indication of strength). Price: Euro 175,-
