Title: Vixen Company (Vixen Engine Company, Vixen Handtub Company) of Somersworth, New Hampshire Handwritten Records
Description: Somersworth, NH, Vixen Company, Publisher. Quarter Leather. 1903-1905. Tall narrow folio ledger, bound in charcoal cloth with maroon leather spine and corners. 216 numbered pages in the ledger but only the first 78 bear writing, with several pages blank within this section. Printed (mechanically reproduced) copies (two) of the Vixen Engine Company's constitution laid in, along with two other handwritten pieces of paper. Records begin July 24th, 1903, and end on September 11th, 1926. The Vixen Company, referred to as the Vixen Handtub Company in the very beginning, and Vixen Engine Company a few times, appears to have been some sort of fraternal organization for firemen in Somersworth, New Hampshire. Handtub refers to the hand pumped container of water used to put out fires. Organizations of firemen would often gather in New England in musters to compete to see who could shoot water the farthest. This organization was perhaps affiliated with that. Mention of a muster in Manchester (NH?) is made at one point, as well as travel to Wilton (NH?). The records provide a list of members and officers, as well as the minutes of meetings from 1903 to 1906. Most of these seem to be procedurally based, with very little content on any actions or activities undertaken by the group. GOOD condition. Covers faded, with some soiling, minor spotting and staining. Leather scuffed and worn along the spine and corners. Interior toned, with minor scattered soiling and staining. Good .
