Title: Verbatim Report of the Five Days' Congo Debate in the Belgian House of Representatives, February 20, 27, 28; March 1, 2, 1906. 59th Congress 2d Session, Document No. 139. Senate
Description: Washington, Government Printing Office, 1906. Pamphlet. Pamphlet, disbound from a larger work and lacking any wrappers issued. 184 pp. A US government printing of a debate in Belgium over the treatment of indigenous people in the Congo (known then as the Congo Free State). Presumably this was printed due to worldwide protests against the treatment of the Congolese people under the colonial rule of King Leopold II of Belgium. The report contains debate on what Belgium should do in regard to the Congo, with some politicians alleging much of the protests were organized by the British to undermine Belgian rule in Africa. King Leopold II essentially owned the Congo Free State as his private property and used violence, torture and other repressive measures on the indigenous peoples to force labor in the extraction of natural rubber. Eventually the country of Belgium annexed (in 1908) the region, in an effort to stop the brutal treatment of the native population. The document itself contains many asides critical of the politicians' speeches. GOOD condition. Tattered remains of binding along the spine. Minor toning and soiling. Binding rolled, with the last leaf especially so. Good .
