Various Authors - The Avatar. No. 18 (?)

Title: The Avatar. No. 18 (?)
Description: Cambridge, MA, Avatar Incorporated, Publisher, 1968. Tabloid. Side folding tabloid newspaper format. 16 pp. Yellow lettering on the front cover. An issue designated #18 in the interior, with no date. We have another issue #18, designated as being published in February, but with 8 pages. Black and white illustrations and photos throughout. Avatar was founded in 1967 by Mel Lyman and his followers at the Fort Hill Community, or Lyman Family, a counterculture commune (or cult, depending on perspective) in the Roxbury area of Boston. Besides publishing the usual counterculture perspective on local and national news, the newspaper also served as a mouthpiece for Lyman's and the Fort Hill Community's philosophy: a quasi-religious and mystical thought drawing on Lyman's unique view of astrological, spiritual and occult history. Mel Lyman originally gained fame as a folk musician. This issue published with a short poem by Mel Lyman, as well as an essay on the new age; short pieces appearing to be by various members of the staff or Fort Hill community, mostly reflecting a new age sort of introspective philosophy. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Moderate to heavy toning. Minor soiling. Minor wrinkling and creasing. A few small tears along the extremities. Good .
