Avatar was founded in 1967 by Mel Lyman and his followers at the Fort Hill Community, or Lyman Family, a counterculture commune (or cult, depending on perspective) in the Roxbury area of Boston. Besides publishing the usual counterculture perspective on local and national news, the newspaper also served as a mouthpiece for Lyman's and the Fort Hill Community's philosophy: a quasi-religious and mystical thought drawing on Lyman's unique view of astrological, spiritual and occult history. Mel Lyman originally gained fame as a folk musician. This issue with a poem by Gerard Malanga, "Two Years After the Disaster;" a discussion of drugs, primarily speed and its dangers; an interview with members of the band Lovin' Spoonful; a page of letters to and from Mel Lyman; various counterculture ads and articles; a brief ad for a tour of America and Britain by the San Francisco Mime Troupe, etc. GOOD condition. Horizontal and vertical fold crease present. Moderate to heavy toning. Minor soiling and a few small stains. Minor wrinkling and creasing. A few small tears along the extremities. Good .
