[African-American, African Methodist Episcopal Church] Jenifer, J.T.; Newton, A.H.; Sisson, J.F.A.; Williams, Amos A.; Chambers, A.J.; Robinson, Geo. T.; Thaxter, Celia et al. - The Independent. January 13, 1876

Title: The Independent. January 13, 1876
Description: New York, Henry C. Bowen, Publisher, 1876. Tabloid. Side folding tabloid journal. Disbound from a larger work. The Independent was a long running newspaper that promoted Congregationalism and advocated for abolition and women's suffrage, among other social issues. This issue contains a strong rebuttal by the Arkansas Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church to a previous editorial published in the Independent. The editorial questioned whether African Americans and African American churches were, essentially, morally corrupt and incorrigible. The AME, in its reply cited its efforts as well as ongoing struggles of African Americans in dealing with the "attitude of the whites in the South," among other issues, but concluding that the editorial was, at the least, incorrect in its assertions. The article is undersigned by various leaders of the AME, including J.T. Jenifer, A.H. Newton and others. Front page with a poem by Celia Thaxter. Various articles on religion, politics, news, etc. also present. GOOD condition. Binding holes along left edge. General toning, minor soiling and foxing to the paper. A few small tears along the extremities. Upper part of pages 13-16 wrinkled, creased and worn, with an old paper tape repair and minor loss in the margins. Good .
