No original wrappers present, if ever included in this format. January through April have full color illustrated plates preceding the month, with May and June having sepia toned prints. Black and white illustrations throughout. Bound volume of the first six issues of this monthly, billed at the time as the "cheapest magazine" in the world. Contents range from fiction to history, exploration, travel, science, etc. This volume includes a look at the Suez region, including a map; a look at life in the South, with a full page illustration of African Americans fishing, but with racial stereotyped text; "oriental and occidental fashions;" several pages, with illustrations, devoted to devices created by Mouchot that allow one to cook and boil water via solar power; seal hunting in St. Lawrence Bay; a story by Jane G. Austin; the history and present production of silver, including mining in Nevada; history and present production of gold, etc. GOOD condition. Minor fading to the covers. Moderate to heavy scuffing along the extremities, including very heavy scuffing to the leather corners on the rear cover. Text block cracked in a few places but solid. Minor scattered foxing/spotting in the interior. Ownership inscriptions in pencil on the rear inside cover. Good .
