Title: Life. April 20, 1905
Description: New York, Life Publishing Company, 1905. Wraps. Gold, back and white illustrated wraps, with front cover illustration by artist Albert Blashfield. Pagination runs 453-465. Single issue of this long running journal providing light-hearted and humorous commentary on politics and culture in America. Includes an interior illustration by James Montgomery Flagg, as well as one by artist and suffragist Mary Ellen Sigsbee Ker. This issue with a piece illustrated by James Montgomery Flagg, depicting Booker T. Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Jacob Riis, William Bryan and Thomas Platt, as children in school. The accompanying dialogue depicts racism, institutional and otherwise, embodied by Bryan, Platt and Riis when they do not let Washington sit with them. Roosevelt asserts that Washington is his friend and can sit with them, much to the chagrin of others. GOOD condition. Presumably disbound from a larger work, with roughness along the spine. Minor toning and soiling to the covers. Some creasing and scuffing along the corners and extremities. Magazine splitting along the spine, making the piece holding together somewhat tenuously. Good .
