Description: Philadelphia, E. Littell and T. Holden, Publishers, 1833. Hard Cover. Paper covered boards with a cloth spine. Pagination runs 146-720. MISSING the January issue, although seemingly not bound in. A general interest magazine reprinting articles or excerpts of articles from various magazines and other sources that were published internationally. Many pieces on literature and authors. Of note in this volume is an account of travels in the Mississippi Valley in which the author discusses Native Americans, their language, customs and burial mounds; an article on a war between the Turks and Egypt; a look at the philosophy or pseudo-science behind the phenomenon of apparitions or ghosts; an account from a Mr. Stuart of Scotland's travels in the United States in which he reflects on slavery, offering several anecdotes of the cruelty experienced by enslaved people, especially in the Charleston area, as well as quoting several African-Americans and their experiences; an account of Murat's travels in the United States where he also discusses slavery, arriving at the racially biased conclusion that Blacks are inferior to whites based partially on their lack of successful rebellion against slaveholders. POOR condition. Binding mostly given out, with the text block SEPARATED into many different sections and not bound into the covers. Exterior stained, soiled, scuffed and overall rather heavily worn. Scattered foxing in the interior, with some pages bearing offsetting or very heavily browned. Some stamping on the inside front cover. Some pages with minor tears or creases. Overall a heavily worn and fragile piece, best handled with care. Poor .
