Description: East Aurora, NY, The Roycrofters, Elbert Hubbard, Publisher, 1904. Wraps. Yellow printed wraps. 32 pp. plus ads, including an illustrated ad for an automobile, The Rambler. A single issue of this little magazine from the turn of the century, featuring essays and philosophical/literary musings on culture, society, art and literature, as well as short aphorisms and sayings throughout. Founded by Hubbard after his 'bitter experience with the New England intellectual and literary elite,' the Philistine was at first intended as a 'one-off jibe at the establishment.' Published through the Roycrofters community in New York, the magazine eventually became a vehicle for Hubbard to express his political and cultural views, while incorporating the Arts and Crafts aesthetic popular at the time, into printing and layout. GOOD condition. Small tear in the upper rear cover. Minor soiling. General browning to the wraps. Minor foxing to the wraps. Alphanumerical notation in pencil to the first page. Two small dampstains at the fore edge. Good .
