Description: Boston, Thomas Groom. Cloth. no date, presumed circa 1840. Greenish cloth. 132 pp. including ads. Two page map of Boston, Massachusetts preceding the title page, with a one page map of railroad lines running from Boston and its vicinity, including western suburbs and Southern New Hampshire. An almanac for the year 1840, containing a biography of notable Boston residents, a history of Boston 200 years prior, lists o newspapers, fires in 1839, stage routes, public houses in Boston, etc. With a description of the establishment and early history of railroads in and around Boston, as well as a time table for their running. Perhaps of note in this are short handwritten entries in the almanac section documenting the departing of various sailing vessels, mostly barks and brigs, noting their names and sometimes, their destinations. This includes the brigs Mermaid and Cherokee. GOOD condition. Ink spotting to the front and rear cover, with a large area of ink staining to the front cover. Minor soiling, general fading and scuffing. Light edgewear. Minor scattered foxing and general toning in the interior. Owner's name present. Good .
