Title: State of the Union. Speech of Hon. Sherrard Clemens, of Virginia, in the House of Representatives, January 22, 1861
Description: Washington, Congressional Globe, Printers, 1861. Pamphlet. [Washington: 1861]. Pamphlet, lacking any wraps that may have been issued. 8 pp. Double columned text. A speech discussing the Union of the United States in the face of secession, seemingly arguing against secession while seeking to find common ground between the North and the South, and perhaps somewhat acting as an apologist for slave powers. This includes citing speeches by William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips that appear to be in favor of secession if the South does not abolish slavery. Clemens cites population statistics in the South, including populations of enslaved people. Sherrard Clemens was a cousin of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), serving as a Democrat in the House of Representatives in 1852-53 and 1857-1861. GOOD condition. Some creasing and wrinkling. Minor foxing. Old price in heavy pencil, as well as the number 43 in ink. Unopened along the top edge. Good .
