A single issue of this long running newsletter/magazine, containing articles and brief essays on civil rights struggles, and African-American efforts to achieve equality, as well as pieces on free speech, communists, the Vietnam War, etc. With a letter from Joseph Heller and an article "You don't have to be Jewish to love Leroi Jones." Also present is a satirical two page comic 'The Adventures of Superiorman,' that takes on perceptions of race from an African-American perspective, at the same time satirizing and exposing Leroi Jones (Amiri Baraka) 'dual existence' (see Sollors Amiri Baraka/LeRoi Jones p. 174) . The Realist was founded in 1958, becoming a key publication in the underground press, often using satire and subversive humor to critique American mainstream politics and culture. Founded by Paul Krassner, an American author, and member of the Merry Pranksters (as well as a founding member of the Yippies) [see Wikipedia]. GOOD condition.
