With an article on chess, including its origins, references to it in literature and poetry, a printing of gambits by Allgaier, Muzio, Salvo and Evans, as well as defenses by Petroff and Philidor and other sequences. Other articles include 'The future of American Railways,' Central British America, the Maroons of Jamaica and Surinam, the progress of the electric telegraph, and a poem, 'The Truce of Piscataqua,' among others. GOOD condition. Ex-library with a circular blind stamp on the title page. No pockets, pastedowns or spine labels present. General fading, minor soiling, minor to moderate scuffing and edgewear. Spine very faded. Page edges foxed, with foxing scattered throughout the interior. Good/No Jacket.
