While speaking in general terms on burials and the important ceremonial and religious aspects of it, Ellis also speaks of historical examples of dealing with the dead, including mummification in ancient Egypt, funeral pyres in ancient Greece and Rome, and the tradition of burials at churchyards. While speaking in general terms, he mentions in brief the process of mummification, speculating on its significance to Egyptian culture, while also alluding to the then current fad of displaying recently disinterred mummies. He also discusses some of the symbolism present on tombstones, both in his time and colonial American times. With a printing of the lyrics of two hymns written for the occasion, by J.H. Clinch and H.W. Fuller. GOOD condition. Uneven soiling, browning, fading and minor staining to the exterior pages, with some creasing at the corners. Small tear to the front fore edge. Minor foxing.
