Description: London, Richard Bentley, 1836. Half-Leather. Half leather with marbled boards, page edges and endpapers. 548, 520 pages. With 16 portrait plates between both volumes. A two volume edition of these memoirs recounting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte as witnessed by Madame Junot and her family-chronicling both his early life and military career and ruler of France. Laure Junot, the wife of the French general Jean-Andoche Junot, was known for her caustic wit and extravagant lifestyle. Spending most of her time in aristocratic circles, she eventually upset Napoleon with her circle of friends and commentary. These memoirs were written under the supervision of Balzac, her lover from 1828 on (Wikipedia). FAIR/GOOD condition. Pages 543-548 plus the rear endpapers are DETACHED and laid in in volume 1. General fading and minor to moderate uneven scuffing to the covers. Heavy scuffing to the leather along the extremities. Minor soiling and spotting to the covers. Leather chipped at the heads of the spines, with some loss. Leather band missing from the upper compartment of volume 2, with the a band torn and partially missing from a compartment on the spine of volume 1. Interiors solid (with the above noted exception) with minor browning to the paper. Some foxing and minor staining to the portrait plates. Minor dampstaining to the first several pages of volume 2, with very light dampstaining along the fore edge of a few pages scattered throughout. Previous owner's signatures present on the title pages. Fair/No Jacket.
