Description: Boston, Mass. Sabbath School Society, Publisher. Wraps. No date, presumed circa 1840, based on OCLC records. Blue printed wraps. 64 pp. Measures approximately 4 ½ by 2 ¾ inches. With a few woodcut illustrations throughout. A reader for children primarily centered on religious or Christian studies, including prayers, questions and answers, the Catechism. Also included is an alphabet reader, accompanied by slightly gruesome woodcuts. A separate woodcut later in the book depicts the burning or Mr. John Rogers, an English martyr. The New England Primer was originally issued as a reading textbook in the American colonies in the early 1700's, going through many editions and variations. GOOD condition. Front wrapper completely split along the hinge, held on by the binding string beneath. Rear wrapper beginning to split, with some chipping and minor loss at the head and tail of the spine. Minor foxing, spotting and staining to the covers. Light edgewear. Interior clean and solid with minor sporadic foxing. A few stray pencil tick marks present. Good .
