Description: Providence, Carter and Wilkinson, Printer, 1795. Unbound. 4 pp. Side folded newspaper. A 1795 newspaper from Providence, Rhode Island, reporting on various maritime happenings (to ships and otherwise) as well as on a fire in Baltimore and an outbreak in New York. Of note is the chronicling of a trial in England of a Miss Broderick for the murder of G. Errington. Also of note is mention of the Privateer (pirate) Tucker and the sloop Dove, who pillaged and plundered a brig 'Sally,' bringing it to Bermuda. This may be Colonel Tucker who agreed to help Benjamin Franklin and George Washington in securing a supply of British gunpowder stored on Bermuda in 1775. Also included is a proclamation declaring November 19th a day of public Thanksgiving, this proclamation being issued by the state of Rhode Island's governor and general assembly. With ads for various products and services. The newspaper is in POOR condition with moderate to heavy dampstaining. Dark stippling and spotting to the lower portion, with general soiling to the piece. This spotting may be mold, although there is no odor indicating such. Heavy browning to the paper. Heavy chipping and tearing along the extremities. Horizontal fold crease present. Poor .
