Title: Unseasonable Truths: The Life of Robert Maynard Hutchins
Description: Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1989. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth spine with silver lettering and grey paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. xx, 616pp. Illustrations. Near fine/near fine. Handsome first edition of this thick biography, with choice autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is an intriguing Typed Letter Signed from the book's subject, 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Chicago, IL, 6 July 1950. Addressed to Fielding J. Stilson. Very good. Original folds. On "University of Chicago" letterhead citing him as chancellor, Hutchins remarks: "Your letter.. indicates that you have been misinformed. I did not make any remarks reflecting personally on Dr. Sproul or the Board of Regents at the University of California relative to the Communist oath. The statements attributed to me were those of a newscaster." Boldly signed in full. Interesting and worth further research. Hutchins (1899-1977) was the wunderkind of educators, having already served as dean of Yale Law School (1927-29) when named president of University of Chicago in 1929! Which post he held until 1945, then named chancellor and serving until 1951. With Mortimer J. Adler, he introduced the famed "Great Books" program, eliminated intercollegiate football and made other radical curriculum changes; he authored many volumes on education issues and served in other influential positions, including president of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, which he founded in 1969. .
