Author: (COOPER, James Fenimore) Title: The Pioneers, or the Sources of the Susquehanna; a Descriptive Tale
Description: New York, Charles Wiley, 1823. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Rebound as two volumes in one in brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. xi, 275pp; 329pp. Overall very good. Modern rebind is pristine and fine, while text block is moderately age toned and sporatically foxed throughout; small contemporary ownership signature at top of first volume title page. A tight and fairly attractive first edition, first state, of this uncredited ("By the Author of 'Precaution'") historical novel and the first of the five "Leatherstocking Tales." Proper first state points present ("E.B. Clayton, Printer" cited on both title pages). Though rebound as a single volume and priced accordingly, this is a decent, quite handleable first edition of this scarce early title. American Imprints 12254. BAL 3829. WRIGHT I 671. .
