Quite tight and attractive early (not first) printing of the third volume in Brooks' 5-volume "Makers and Finders" literary history series that began with "The Flowering of New England: 1818-1865" in 1936 and concluded with "The Confident Years:1885-1915" in 1952. This sharp copy bears a fine autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from Brooks, blue heavy stock 5½" X 3½" postal card, New York, NY, 18 April 1948. Fine. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). On his imprinted note card, Brooks tells this admirer, "I will be glad to inscribe the books if you will send them here. But I cannot carry parcels to the post office. Please have the books stamped for return & wrapped in a package (or packages) small enough to be dropped into the parcel=box on my corner.." Handsomely penned and boldly signed; address portion on verso also in Brooks' hand. .
