CORNFORD, Frances - Autumn Midnight

Title: Autumn Midnight
Description: London, The Poetry Bookshop, 1923. Paperback. 8vo. Stiff pink wrappers. 23pp. Frontispiece, 17 rubricated initial capitals, 5 tailpieces, decorations. Very good. Bit of age toning to outer wrapper edges, else tight and internally fine. A lovely and superb first edition, early printing, of this slim verse gathering by the granddaughter of Charles Darwin, English poet Cornford (1886-1960). Usual misspelled "SXIPENCE" on front wrapper; title page decoration ("To J. & G. / from / F.C. & E.G.") in black (others bear this printed in green or red). Gill's woodcuts are as usual a delight. Front flyleaf bears an intriguing ownership signature worth further research: "Helen Davies [illegible]." Eric Gill had three daughters with wife Esther, and one of them (Betty, 1905-56) married David Pepler, son of Gill's colleague Hilary Pepler (English printer, poet/writer) and the first of their five children was Helen. In 1951 she married well-known National Park warden Wilfred Davies. It's feasible this copy belonged to Eric Gill's granddaughter, though the lack of handwriting exemplars makes identifying this with certitude impossible and the illegible final word (""Mc----" -- McCosh" or similar) further hampers identification. Makes you wonder, though. .
