BAUER, Hank - Championship Baseball

Title: Championship Baseball
Description: Garden City, Doubleday & Company, 1968. Hardcover. Small 4to. Yellow cloth with black spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 119pp. Illustrations. Near fine/very good. Lower right front board corner slightly bumped; jacket faintly edgeworn. Handsome, tight first edition of this surprisingly scarce how-to. Bauer (1922-2007) was the famed New York Yankees (1948-59) and Kansas City Athletics (1960-61) right fielder who went on to manage the Athletics (1961-62), Baltimore Orioles (1964-68) and Oakland Athletics (1969); in 1966 he led the Orioles to their first World Series title. This special copy bears a unique frontispiece, for tipped to the blank leaf facing the title page is a signed head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling Bauer in Yankees uniform. Very good. This printed photograph shows tape stains at each corner and lower edge center. Bauer signs large and bold in blue ballpoint across the center. Jacket front panel boasts, "How to Master Hitting, Running, Fielding, and Pitching, Told by a Great Player and Manager," and this he does in twelve concise chapters. Exceptional copy of this quite uncommon title. .
