BUCHANANO, Georgio - Paraphrasis Psalmorum Davidus Poetica

Title: Paraphrasis Psalmorum Davidus Poetica
Description: Cathalanui [Chalons-sur-Marne], Claudium Guyot, 1601. Hardcover. 32mo. Full vellum with spine hand-lettered in black ink. 333pp, 55pp. Very good. Binding tight and strong, if a bit age toned; some small inoffensive dampstain spots near rear; green oval inkstamp of "Bibiliotheque d'Abbeville" on title page. Later French printing of this 1565 text in contemporary vellum, though a quite early imprint from Chalons-sur-Marne. Buchanan began penning this "Poetic Paraphrase of the Psalms of David" while translating the Psalms into Latin as a prisoner of the Inquisition for certain of his religious writings in the Monastery of São Bento in Lisbon in 1551. They weren't published until around 1565 and went through several altered printings. George Buchanan (1506-82) was an important and prolific Scottish historian, scholar and humanist writer whose influence was widespread during the Scottish Reformation; he was renowned in his day for the beauty and fluidity of his Latin and produced many volumes of poetry, history and political theory in that language. .
