BAKER, George - The New Sad Sack

Title: The New Sad Sack
Description: New York, Simon and Schuster, 1946. Hardcover. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with black lettering and decoration. (Ca. 150pp). Extensive line drawings. Very good. Faintest of binding edgewear only; lacks dust jacket. Tight and nice first edition. Baker writes a lengthy preface to this second gathering of his "Yank" magazine cartoons chronicling the misadventures of this low-level U.S. Army G.I. -- first published in book form with "The Sad Sack" in 1944. In 1957 a film version was released, and this unusual copy bears two choice autograph additions in the form of autographs of that comedy's star and another cast member, each tipped to front flyleaf: At top title character JERRY LEWIS (1926-2017, plays Private Bixby) inscribes and signs ("Luck always / to Donald Burnell / Jerry Lewis") an irregularly-trimmed roughly triangular 4" X 2½" slip in blue ballpoint (a bit age toned, with several tape stains around edges slightly touching some letters, undated but vintage, circa 1960); and below this GENE EVANS (1922-98, plays Sergeant Pulley) signs a fine heavy stock 5" X 3" card, dating it 8 June 1987 at upper right. For good measure, this book is accompanied by three fine glossy black-and-white 10" X 8" photographs, each a delightful still scene from the film. Also present is Evans' original transmittal envelope. Incredibly unusual copy!.
