Title: Collection of 11 "Catalogue of the Corporation, Faculty and Students.
Description: Amherst, Amherst College, 1826. Paperback. Sizes range from 12mo to 8vo. Wrappers. 14pp, 16pp, 16pp, 16pp, 16pp, 16pp, 16pp, 20pp, 20pp, 20pp, 20pp. Overall very good, with a few good plus only and a few near fine. Binding traces along gutters, with varying degrees of mild edgewear and edge tears, bit of age toning and occasional foxing. A fine grouping of early catalogues from this famed liberal arts institution, founded in 1821 and represented here with the years 1826-29, 1832, 1834-38 and 1844/45. Of special interest is the 1835 catalogue: Laid in alongside the list of 41 seniors is a 4¼" X 10" handwritten sheet entitled "Room-rent in the Senior Class. Also Library-tax," followed by a three-column list of 31 senior's names, the amounts of their room rent (which ranges from $5.00 to .25 cents) and for nine of them a library tax (which ranges from .50 to .12 cents). Printed pages 6-12 bear in the same hand inked notations alongside the name of every junior, sophomore and freshman recording their room rent and library tax -- a unique and fascinating behind-the-scenes record of student finances. Who penned this "Room-rent" list and the accompanying notes in the booklet is not recorded, though presumably a college official of some sort. Unique historical record of this college's room rents and library fines. Also of interest is that Emily Dickinson's father Edward (1803-74), a noted attorney, served as treasurer for Amherst College from 1835 to 1873, so his name appears in this capacity on the opening leaf noting trustees and officers on five of these eleven pamphlets. .
