Small "ding" at lower right corner of front board. "Facsimile 5," a handsome facsimile reprint of the scarce 1868 first edition. Even this reprint is a bit uncommon. Tipped to the inner flyleaf is a choice Typed Letter signed from the publisher of this edition, the late Robert Younger, 2pp, 8½" X 11", Dayton, OH, 1972 May 4. Addressed to ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On "Morningside Press" letterhead, Younger discusses his reprints of Civil War classics: "..one in particular: Ephraim McDowell Anderson's First Missouri Confederate Brigade was first printed in 1868 in St. Louis, and, according to a letter written in 1908 by Anderson, less than one hundred copies were issued before the printing plant was destroyed by fire, so I believe we have in essence a new book because of its great rarity. We have added to the Anderson a new map by Barbara Long, foreword, notes and index by Edwin C. Bearss, the foremost expert on the Transmississippi Civil War West..." Boldly signed in blue ballpoint. "One of the better Confederate narratives," notes James I. Robertson, Jr. "written by an upper-class Southerner and strongly revealing for social conditions in the Confederacy." NEVINS I, 51. .
