BRADFORD, George P. (1807-90) - Autograph Quotation Signed

Title: Autograph Quotation Signed
Description: This Unitarian minister about whom little is known was an intimate of Emerson (having served as best man at his wedding) and friend of Thoreau and the Transcendentalists and for a time in the 1840s lived at their famed utopian community, Brook Farm; one scholar describes him as "teacher, thinker, and friend of literary men." AQS, 1p, 10½" X 6 3/4", n.p. 1872 June 9. Very good. Very mild age toning and a few light spots of foxing. Handsomely penned in brown, signed and dated at the close, this unattributed stanza reads in full: "If once we knew, his fertile gift could lend, / With worthy verses I this page might fill, / But since alas! no muse will me befriend, / Instead of deed, kindly accept the will." On heavy stock paper, presumably from an autograph album. Most unusual and quite attractive. .
