Plus 16 finely engraved folding plates, each with multiple images, bound at end. HARDCOVER, bound in contemporary calf and marbled boards, French corners, gilt morocco lettering-piece to spine, gilt tooling direct, yellow edges, old unobtrusive manuscript shelf ticket to spine; old military institutional stamps to title and two pages inside. In a very good condition, with fine, mostly crisp plates. Overall an excellent copy. ~ Jordan 0770. The "Ouvrage posthumes" comprises of 3 volumes, each complete in itself. Louis de Cormontaigne (here: Cormontaingne), (1695-1752). French military engineer, Vauban's successor. Had a decisive influence on the art of fortification well into the 19th century, although most of his works were published posthumously. In 1745 he became brigadier and was appointed director of fortifications in the towns of Moselle (Metz, Thionville, Bitche, Verdun, Longwy).
