Title: Texas art of Frank Callcott
Description: Austin, Stevenson Press, 1978. First Edition. 0 pp. Unbound. 089482032X. Portfolio, approximately 16.75" x 21.75", consisting of cover page, title-page, copyright-page with a black-and-white portrait of Callcott--"Frank Collcott at Work"--Steven Kahl, two text pages (containing "I. Frank Collcott: A Profile", "II. Texas History: The Background", "III. The Texas Centennial Series" and "Contents" ), and eleven facsimiles of Callcott's etchings and lithographs with interleaved sheets with a "descriptive notes that accompany each print [that] were written by the artist." The series was begun in 1935 and completed three years later. The original edition was limited to twenty sets. Of these original twenty, "only six remain intact". Three are in institutional collections and three are in private hands. The other fourteen sets have been broken up. The original Collcott's Texas contained ten lithographs and etchings. In this facsimile, an additional print of "Hampton Ruins" is included since it has sometimes been shown with the original ten. The prints included in this portfolio are "San Jose Mission," "Sn Jose Mission -- Dining Hall," "The Mission of the Sword," "San Juan Capistrano," "The Cos House," "Mission de la Purisima Concepcion," "The Alamo -- Midnight, March 6, 1936," "The Alamo -- Midsummer's day, 1936," "Goliad -- 100 Years After," "Goliad -- 'Through this door they went forth .'", and "Hampton Ruins -- The Price of War." The condition of the cardboard portfolio and the twenty-seven sheets are in near fine condition with foxing appearing largely on the cover sheet, secondarily on the title-page, but only at the very extreme edges of the remaining sheets. There is no indication of the print-run of this facsimile, but the suspicion is that it was relatively small. Currently, it is uncommon in any condition. Fine.
