Priest and writer, Caillau, was successively a member of the Missions de France, rector of Sainte-Geneviève and chaplain of the Infirmerie Marie-Thérèse. His love of missionary life made him decline episcopal honours and a chair at the Sorbonne, but was no obstacle to his literary pursuits. Besides contributions to the Bibliographie Catholique, he wrote many other works. In 1842 Caillau published this collection of 160 previously unpublished sermons attributed by him to Saint Augustine. He traced them mainly in the Library of Mont-Cassin and of the Medicis in Florence. The insertion of new sermons under the name of St. Augustine brought about a great controversy between Caillau and other researchers like Guillon and Angelo Mai, the last considering most of them as authentic (See: Ceillier, Histoire générale des auteurs ecclésiastiques, IX, pp. 835vv.) Small library stamp on first flyleaf, some slight browning and foxing, covers bit shaved else very good, solid and clean. 3 copies in OCLC on-line only (all EU). Graesse I, p. 253.
