Description: [Netherfield]: Sub-Wealden Exploration, July 17, 1873. Ticket, 100 x 170 mm. Printed and manuscript. Ticket number 103, a pass to inspect "at any time" the boring operations of the Sub-Wealden Exploration. The Sub-Wealden boring was begun 1872 to ascertain the order and thickness of the secondary rocks below the south-east of England> Henry Willett was the Hon. Secretary of this private enterprise which was funded by grants from the Government, the Royal Society and the British Association and included contributions from Charles Darwin. This first bore reached a depth of 1,018 feet before a problem with the drilling rods caused it to be abandoned. A second bore was started in 1875 and had reached 1,903 feet by March 1876> it finished its explorations in 1877. The recipient of this open ticket may have been one of the early contributors to the project.
