"In conjunction with the above, there will be a Grand Display of Fireworks, for which every endeavour will be put forth to make it unequalled by any former display in Lincoln." The first British open brass band competition was staged in Manchester in 1851 with an audience of over 16,000> this would make the present competition among the earliest to be staged.
