Description: Azores: A. Aruda, 1962. A collection of 18 black and white photographs, each 175 x 240 mm. on thin card mounts 370 x 450 mm. Mounts a little scuffed along the edges. A loose collection with captions in white ink in Portuguese. The operation shown here was owned by Dr Augusto Rebello Arruda, the firm [A. Arruda Pineapple Plantation] is still growing pineapples to this day on the island of St. Michael. Taken to celebrate the visit of the president of the Portuguese Republic, Admiral Thomas Americo and his wife in 1962. Pineapples in the Azores are grown under glass and this fine series of photographs illustrate the complete process: the gathering or materials, the erection and maintenance of large glasshouses, and the harvesting, packaging and exportation of the fruit> showing a blend of traditional and modern methods.
