Title: Bullfighters. Photographic Fan.
Description: Madrid: J. Laurent, 1864 - 68. A fine photographic fan, 250 x 470 mm. maximum dimensions. Albumen photographs of bullfighters and bullfighting scenes, bulls and horses, backed onto taffeta designed paper, mounted on wooden sticks with a mother of pearl ring around the rivet. Jean Laurent [1816 - 86] was a French photographer who mostly worked in Spain opening a studio in Madrid in 1856. He mostly sold photographs of Spain and Portugal and opened a store in Paris for that purpose in 1868. One of his more unusual projects was the production of decorative fans using a mosaic of photographs, generally of bullfighters> due to their nature, few have survived although some examples can be found in museums in Spain. This example can be dated to between 1864 and 1868 as it features the bullfighter Cúchares who was replaced after his death by Frascuelo. Reference: Badia-Villaseca, Sara. (2009).
