Title: Souvenir Presented by the Palace Theatre to Commemorate the Third Anniversary of the Biograph.
Description: The British Mutoscope and Biograph Co., Ltd., March 19th, 1900. Small 4to. pp. 28, [4]> photographic illustrations. Wrappers, front wrapper torn along the spine, almost detached. The first souvenir book issued by England's first cinema which in March 1897began to screen films from the American Biograph Company as part of its programme of entertainment. These films pioneered the 70 >mm. format which helped give an exceptionally large and clear image filling the proscenium arch. The performances included early newsreels from around the world, many of them made by film pioneer William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, including film of the Boer War (1900) as represented here with the title "The War in Biograph.". The Palace continued to show films as part of its variety and musical programmes. The British Mutoscope and Biograph Company was an offshoot of the American company, which was later to introduce D.W. Griffith as actor, writer and later director. An enclosed letter dated 1992 from the Archives of the Barnes Museum of Cinematography to the previous owner of this souvenir writes "In all our years of collecting, we have never come across another copy."
