Description: Winterthur: J. Wurster et Cie., 1862. Hand coloured engraved map, 930 x 695 mm. old folds, and a few old creases and splits along the folds, with a couple of old repairs.. Presentation copy from the author, Swiss geologist Alphonse Favre to Dr. Hugh Falconer, Scottish palaeontologist. A nice association copy inscribed "à> Monsieur le Docteur Falconer homage de l'auterur [signature]" from Alphonse Favre [1815 - 1890], the pioneer of Alpine geology, this being the first geological map of the region, to Dr Hugh Falconer [1808 - 65], geologist, botanist and palaeontologist. Falconer travelled extensively on the Continent in his later years and it likely that the scientists met during that time. Rare in commerce, no copy traced at auction.
