Guillié was a pioneer in education for the blind, though a controversial figure who was accused of only promoting policies which made him look good. Nevertheless his manual for activities for the blind was adopted in France at the Royal Institution for the Blind of which he was Director-General and many of his ideas crossed the Channel to be incorporated into British education for the blind.
