Title: Strange customs and weird beliefs of the Padaung giraffe-neck women, by Howard Y. Bary. [Interesting Facts and Illustrations of the Royal Padaung Giraffe-Neck Women from Burma. Cover title]
Description: 1933. 4to. pp. 8> illustations. 240 x 185 mm. staples rusted. A rare and fragile publication with a single U.K. location [Sheffield University] and two U.S. locations. The Padaung women traditionally use brass coils to give the appearance of an extended neck, starting at around 5 years of age. Of course, the neck itself is not stretched, but the clavicle is lowered to give a similar effect. This pamphlet outlines the author's expeditions, following which he persuaded a small group to accompany him to America where they travelled widely and were examined by medical experts including an attempt to x-ray their necks. The rear cover is a witty cartoon showing "Representatives of the two tribes of self torturers" featuring Uncle Sam and a Padaung woman, by W.A. Ireland, cartoonist for the Columbus, Ohio, Journal-Dispatch.
