Description: c. 1800? Pen and ink drawing, 220 x 180 mm. The caption is incorrect. This memorial to Hawke is located in St. Nicholas Church, North Stoneham, Hampshire. Swaithling [or Swaythling] is part of the neighbouring South Stoneham. Edward Hawke [1705 - 81] was a Royal Naval officer who took part in many actions, mostly against the French in the seemingly never-ending conflicts of the 18th century. He distinguished himself a number of times and when he retired from the sea sat as Member of Parliament for Portsmouth from 1747 - 1776.
