Title: 5 Fine Pen and Ink Drawings.
Description: c. 1810? 5 pen and ink drawings on card, 57 x 85 mm. 4 landscape/house views and 1 portrait. Whilst we are not positive that these are by Elizabeth Cobbold, the subject matter is distinctly related and the captions to the reverse are in a hand reminiscent of hers. Two of the images are of The Cliff, Ipswich, where she lived during most of her marriage to John Cobbold> Christ Church Park was a later Cobbold property but I am not sure when it entered their hands. The portrait is titled 'The Chevalier'. Could this be John Chevalier Cobbold, John Cobbold's son and Elizabeth's step-son? Or perhaps his grandfather Temple Chevalier, father to J.C. snr's first wife? Elizabeth Cobbold [née Knipe 1765 - 1824], married John Cobbold [1746 - 1835] as his second wife in 1791> she was step-mother to his 15 children and bore 7 herself. She was a published poet, an accomplished artist, scientist, philanthropist and an early supporter of women's rights.
