The various inventions were used to treat an assortment of general and specific ailments including curvatures of the spine, unnatural smallness of the chest, abdominal hernia, dropsy, mesentric affectations, joint stiffness, bowed leg, etc. Joseph Amesbury [1795 - 1864] was an orthopaedic surgeon who invented a number of appliances to treat fractures and bone deformities.
