Title: Memorandum upon Land Settlement in Rhodesia with Accompanying Papers and Maps.
Description: Printed for the British South Africa Company by Waterlow & Sons, 1913. Folio. pp. vi, 245> 2 large coloured folding maps. Original wrappers. Rare with the Bodleian as the sole worldwide location listed. This extensive study covers the land grab by Rhodes' Company and others of vast tracts of the area which are now modern day Zimbabwe and Zambia and is accompanied by what are believed to be the earliest maps to show Southern Rhodesia and Northern Rhodesia as separate entities. The British South Africa Company [BSAC], formed under Cecil Rhodes, already had ownership and administrative rights to large areas of this land but it was subsequently considered unmanageable by a private company and in 1923 Southern Rhodesia was formally annexed by Britain as a self-governing colony> a complicated arrangement made Northern Rhodesia a protectorate under the Colonial Office with BSAC retaining much land and the mineral rights in the area.
