Description: Sanger's Grand National Amphitheatre, 1882. Bifolium, 320 x 260 mm. a little frayed along the joint. In 1871 John and George Sanger took over Astley's Royal Amphitheatre, the first modern circus ring founded in 1773. They also ran circuses and zoos at Leicester, Bristol, Margate and Ramsgate. The Grand National Amphitheatre was closed and demolished in 1893. This programme features various equestrian and clown acts, followed by a Pantomime "Bluff King Hal" with a synopsis of the scenery which includes a transformation scene. Also "...introducing the Magnificent Zoological Collection including the Greatest Novelty on Earth, the Mother Elephant "Victoria" and her Calf "Prince of Wales.""
