Description: Royal Aquarium, 1887. Large crepe paper handkerchief, 425 x 660 mm. printed in colour and black and white, edges a little creased. The colour printed "blank" is here overprinted with the programme. These blanks often feature oriental designs and were used indiscriminately for a great many souvenir handkerchiefs, and as here, programmes. ""Krao" the missing link. On view all day." Krao, was a native of South-east Asia, possibly Laos or Thailand, born with hypertrichosis, [body covered in hair], captured by explorers and later adopted by The Great Farini [William Leonard Hunt] who exhibited her in England and America. Alternative accounts suggest that Farini actively sought out her people and acquired her from the King of Burma> the origins of side shows were frequently embellished and the actual truth is difficult to ascertain. She was advertised as the missing link between man and ape and proof of Darwin's theory of evolution.
