Title: East India Company's Charter.
Description: Charles Knight, April 1, 1833. Large 8vo. pp. 33 - 48. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Issued as the 3rd supplement to the Companion to the Newspaper. A separately issued 16 page article which included a history of the Company to the present time, questions regarding the propriety of permitting Europeans to reside in India, effects of the recent partial opening of the trade to India, the question as to the propriety of opening trade with China, the propriety of separating the political from the commercial character of the company and papers respecting the East India Company's Charter, issued March 27, 1833. The Charter was renewed by Act of Parliament in 1813 and became due again for renewal in 1833. This renewal was a significant milestone in the history of the Company. The Governor of Bengal became the Governor of India, with the effect that the Governors of Madras and Bombay lost their legislative powers. It ended the activities of the British East India Company as a commercial body and it became a purely administrative body. In particular, the Company lost its monopoly on trade with China and other parts of the Far East.
